Mathematics and Applied Mathematics

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.

  • An ever greater mathematical proficiency is required from anyone working in the fields of science and technology.
  • Mathematics, the language of science, enables scientists to communicate precisely and unambiguously.
  • The mathematical skills acquired in calculus, linear algebra and differential equations have become essential for a wide range of disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology and economics.
  • Mathematics training develops a logical and disciplined way of thinking, an asset for any career or field of study.

The department offers a range of modules for students planning to major in pure and/or applied mathematics, leading to B.Sc., B.Com. and B.A. degrees. Several service modules are taught to Biology, Agriculture and Education students, as well as to those from the Architecture and Quantity Surveying and Construction Management departments.

The department participates in a programme to assist students who are inadequately prepared for university studies.
