The Department of Mathematical Statistics and Actuarial Science is on the main campus in Bloemfontein. The department celebrated its 50th year in 2006 making it one of the oldest statistics departments in South Africa. The department offers programmes in Mathematical Statistics, Actuarial Science and Statistics for biological orientated students and for commerce orientated students and has recently added Investment Science to its programmes.
The Investment Science degree is specifically designed for students with a passion for mathematics and the workings of finance in investment, in particular for students who wish to eventually qualify as a Chartered Financial Analysts; as opposed to the Actuarial Science degree, which also puts focus on the insurance world and puts students far on the course to becoming Actuaries.
