The Department Anaesthesiology is a friendly department which is inpace with the demands of the current South Africa. The personnel are dedicated and participate in all aspects of clinical and university functions. The department is geared towards the future and there is a process of sensible transformation and –planning to provide in the needs of the future. In addition to training and research, clinical anaesthesia services are provided at Universitas-, National-, Pelonomi and Oranje Hospitals and at our satellite departments at Kimberley Hospital and 3 Military Hospital. The department’s Pain Control Unit and Preoperative Anaesthesia Evaluation Clinic provide unique training opportunities.

The mission of the department is to promote scholarship and service to the members of thedepartment and the community by development, integration, transfer, and application ofknowledge, in particular anaesthetic knowledge, by:
- promoting of an academic thinking and culture, particularly applied to medicine and anaesthesia
- creating opportunities for critical scientific thinking and application related to anaesthesia
- providing relevant anaesthesia training, theoretical and practical
- development of new knowledge by basic and clinical anaesthetic research
- community service through our core functions of training and service in the hospitals where we work, but also by development of services and special community projects and –knowledge
- development of under-and postgraduate students as total humans and doctors in the community.
