Short CVPh.D. (Zoology) from Rand Afrikaans University (Johannesburg), 1985
Area of ExpertiseGenerally on aquatic parasitology. Mainly specialising on all types of symbiotic associations between ciliophorans (Ciliophora: Peritrichia) and various hosts. Hosts mainly include marine and freshwater organsisms like fish, frogs, echinoderms, molluscs, polychaetes and sea squirts. Groups specifically receiving attention are mobile peritrichs of the families Urceolariidae and Trichodinidae. Although the latter family has been well-studied in Middle and Eastern Europe, it has been totally ignored in Africa. The southern African peritrich fauna of freshwater fish has received our attention over the last 20 years, and many papers, mainly on the systematics and general biology of these ciliophorans, have appeared. Papers on trichodinids collected from Israel, Taiwan, Mauritius and Botswana have also appeared.
Research over the last years, have included the marine environment as well, especially the intertidal zone. Various animal groups act as hosts for both the families Trichodinidae and Urceolariidae. A number of publications on this aspect have appeared to date.
