A substantial portion of postgraduate students studying under the UFS banner are from countries outside South Africa. The growth in doctoral students is fairly stable, but postdoctoral students show a strong increase. International postdoctoral students doubled over the last five years.

The honours students are mainly from neighbouring Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe. A constant stream of students are also coming from countries outside Africa, namely China, Korea, the Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the USA.

The biggest contingent of international students studying towards their Master’s degrees is from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Outside Africa, countries such as Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Korea, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK are also represented.
